  1. Welcome aboard this Cobra Mk III trading
  2. and combat craft.  The ship has been
  3. supplied to you by Faulcon daLacy
  4. Spaceways, by arrangement with the
  5. Galactic Co-operative of Worlds whose
  6. Space and Interstellar Pilot's Exams you
  7. have just successfully completed.   The
  8. small flight manual supplied with the
  9. craft is designed to familiarise you
  10. with all aspects of space flight, combat
  11. and trading, and we hope that it will be
  12. of use to you.

  14. The Cobra Mk III incorporates Zieman
  15. Deflection Shields, fore and aft, 4 hull
  16. mountings for Ingram 'rapid-fire' pulse
  17. lasers a Lance  Ferman 'seek kill'
  18. missile system, a Holodirect ThruSpace
  19. GravDistort communications system, and
  20. provision for a cargo bay extension.

  22. You begin your career, your ship
  23. equipped with a single forward-firing
  24. pulse laser, three homing missiles, 7
  25. light years of fuel, and the sum of 100
  26. Credits (CR), ready to embark from a
  27. space station in orbit around the planet
  28. Lave.
  29.  
  30. The Cobra Mk III is the best of the
  31. medium-range, medium capacity
  32. fighter-traders, and is an ideal ship
  33. for new traders intent on building their
  34. fortunes, or new combateers who will
  35. constantly need to finance the cost of
  36. both armaments and non-combative
  37. equipment.

  39. The ship is highly manoeuvrable, has a
  40. good C-holding factor during hyperspace
  41. transit, can hold sufficient Quirium
  42. H-fuel for a 7-light-year single jump
  43. and has full Auto Trading Systems Link
  44. for use at space stations.  Further, it
  45. is protected by dual Zieman Energy
  46. Deflection Shields, powered by four
  47. energy banks, and has a powerful,
  48. rapid-fire pulse laser mounted on the
  49. forward hull segment.  Flight controls
  50. are elegant and simple, and the bridge
  51. is equipped with both HoloDirect and
  52. ThruSpace GravDistort communications
  53. systems.  Its life support functions are
  54. varied and flexible to ensure maximum
  55. comfort during trading or hunting
  56. operations.
  57.  
  58. Pilot licences are issued only at the
  59. planet Lave, and it is likely,
  60. therefore, that you are now docked at a
  61. Coriolis station in orbit around that
  62. particular world.  Lave is a rich,
  63. agricultural dictatorship, but is a
  64. reasonably safe world at which to begin
  65. your endeavours. GalCop and the Lave
  66. Authorities allow practice docking and
  67. departure runs to all their space
  68. stations here, and you would be advised
  69. to take advantage of this facility.
  70. The cargo hold fills the bulk of the
  71. mid-space area, and the cargo bay doors
  72. open downwards.  The capacity in an
  73. unmodified Cobra is 20 1-tonne
  74. canisters.  Extra cargo space may be
  75. acquired by extending the cargo bay,
  76. which does not affect manoeuvrability.
  77. Tonne canisters (TC) attach magnetically
  78. to the cargo arms within the bay, and
  79. two AutoShuttles occupy the central
  80. space.
  81. The bridge has seats for pilot and
  82. co-pilot, a MedStim Centre, entrance to
  83. the escape pod, is descent well to
  84. living quarters, communications console,
  85. special suit locker, RemLock supply
  86. case, attachment facilities for AutoDock
  87. System and a hand-weapons locker.  The
  88. main wall is occupied by the scanner
  89. screen, astrogation console and main
  90. systems monitors.
  91. The drive sector houses the directional
  92. thrusts, the System Space Kruger
  93. 'lightfast' motors, and the Irrikon
  94. Thru-Space drives. Also here are rear
  95. laser housing, the ECM capsule, the
  96. Zieman shield generators, and energy
  97. banks, the Witch-Space fuel condensers
  98. (Quirium).  There are both internal and
  99. external access panels.  Radiation level
  100. is high.
  101. The living and hygiene section is below
  102. the main bridge, and reached through a
  103. descending gravity well.  Two bunks,
  104. food dispensing facilities ,waste
  105. disposal (including high-tox copper
  106. exudate for Aonians) ,Synpleasure
  107. relaxapads ,and videos.
  108. The equipment level runs throughout the
  109. ship, and houses all the energy banks
  110. for lasers, plus the missile rests, with
  111. dispatch shafts to the lower hull.  The
  112. communications centre is here, and the
  113. escape pod (with a separate entrance
  114. from the bridge) life support systems,
  115. cryogen tanks (two) and forty cubic
  116. metres of FacsEnvironment for energy
  117. use.
  118. The 'Present System' refers to the
  119. planetary system which your ship is
  120. currently in; while the 'Hyperspace
  121. System' refers to the system onto which
  122. the hyperspace is locked.

  124. 'Legal Status' refers to your Galactic
  125. Police record.  If this is CLEAN you
  126. have nothing to worry about, but as an
  127. OFFENDER or, still worse, a FUGITIVE you
  128. are likely to be attacked by police
  129. ships.

  131. The 'Rating' is a dispassionate
  132. assessment of your performance in combat
  133. so far.

  135. Current cash and fuel are also
  136. displayed, along with a list of ship
  137. fittings.
